Recently, Sinopec performed a shore-based bunkering operation for Northern PathFinder, a LNG-powered liquid carbon dioxide (LCO2) carrier newly built by Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co. (DSIC) in Dalian, China. This oeperation marks the first in China as an international vessel gets fueled with bonded LNG within a shipyard via tank trucks.

Sinopec’s execution of shore-based bunkering offers several advantages, including lower upfront costs and increased flexibility, making it especially well-suited for refueling newly built ships at shipyards.

The Northern Pathfinder is the second vessel of a series of four LCO2 carriers, as part of the world’s largest dedicated LCO2 carrier fleet operated by Northern Lights, a joint venture among Shell, Equinor and TotalEnergies. This fleet will play a crucial role in supporting the world’s first cross-border CO2 transportation and storage infrastructure.
